| The hospice movement has earned
public admiration, endorsement and much local support for its work
with people, young and old, who face a limited life span or indeed
the end of life – whether that work is carried out in a hospice
or in the community. We would like even more people, especially
children and teenagers, to understand what we do and why we do it.
Help the Hospices is creating resources for
schools with the aim of nurturing a sense of responsibility in pupils
and encouraging them to become active citizens – by informing
them about the hospice movement and by showing them how they can
help people with life-limiting illnesses, whether that be through
telling others, fundraising or volunteering.
How can my school get involved?
Your school could really make a difference, by helping support a
local hospice. You might like to consider your school adopting your
local hospice as its charity of the year.
There are many ways in which your school can
help and support a local hospice, by
• fundraising – non-uniform days, sponsored events,
talent shows, etc.
• collecting stock for the hospice’s charity shops
• awareness raising
• entertaining day care patients
• producing art work for the wards
The Hospice Pack – key stage 3
Help the Hospices has produced a free resource for 11-14 year olds,
which contains assembly and lesson materials. The materials have
been developed in conjunction with practising teachers, hospice
staff and school managers and piloted across the UK.
The hospice pack links to three areas of the
core curriculum, Citizenship, PSHE/ PSD and RE: it consists of sections
looking at the Hospice Movement, Children's understanding and experience
of loss and grief, and faith and cultural aspects of bereavement.
There are also two suggested assemblies and six lessons. The CD
Rom contains a game, back up materials and activities for pupils.
